The bath weighs a little over eight hundred kilos. It was carved from a single block of river stone, and it entered the house through the window it now looks out of — there was no other way.

Why stone

A wooden house wants a few heavy anchors — things that hold temperature and silence. The bath is the heaviest and the quietest. Fill it in the evening and the stone stays warm long after the water has gone.

The window came second

People assume we placed the bath in front of the view. In truth we built the window around the bath: the sill height, the mullions, the way the forest sits in the frame from water level. It is the one room in the house designed to be seen from lying down.

If you visit in the mist season — late September, early October — take your book in there at dusk. You will not read a page.
